With hurricane season starting June 1, it’s a good time to shop for flood insurance. Act soon because a flood policy typically takes effect 30 days after purchase.
Reasons to shop:
- Since 1996, 99% of U.S. counties have been affected by flooding.
- One inch of water in a home or apartment can cause over $26,000 in damage.
- People who have flood insurance receive an average claim payment of $68,000.
To shop, talk to your home or renters insurance agent or company. If they don’t offer a flood policy, go online to floodsmart.gov to find a company. You can use the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) quoting tool to get policy and premium costs.
