Why would my home insurance claim be denied or not paid?

Español

Have you filed a homeowners insurance claim and wondered why the company didn’t pay it? Learn more about some reasons why and how you can ask for a second look.

  1. Why was my claim denied?

The most common reason companies deny claims is because the policy doesn’t pay for certain types of damage. For example, most policies don’t cover flooding or rodent and insect damage.

If you file a claim and your policy doesn’t cover the damage, the company will deny the claim.

  2. Why was my claim closed but I didn’t get paid?

A company might close a claim without paying anything if the amount of damage was less than the deductible. The deductible is the amount you’re responsible for paying before the company pays.

For example, if the cost to fix your house is $5,000 and your deductible is $10,000, your company won’t pay your claim.

Many people choose a higher deductible to lower their premium. Talk to your agent if you want to change your deductible. You can find your deductible amount on your policy’s declarations page. Ask your agent if you can’t find it.

  3. What can you do?

If your claim was denied or wasn’t paid, ask your company for the reason. The insurance company must tell you in writing why it denied a claim.

If you think the company should pay more for a claim, tell the company why and send them supporting documents, such as a contractor’s estimate for the repairs. If the company still disagrees, you can ask for an appraisal.

If you think your insurance company unfairly denied your claim, you can file a complaint with TDI. TDI can ask a company to relook at the policy to be sure it made the correct decision.
