Other ways to get auto, home, and wind insurance in Texas

Español

If you’re having a hard time finding an insurance company that will sell you an auto, home, or windstorm policy, you can turn to a state-designated insurer of last resort.

  1. Auto insurance

You can apply for coverage through the Texas Automobile Insurance Plan Association (TAIPA) if you’ve been turned down for auto liability coverage by at least two insurance companies in the past 60 days.

TAIPA policies offer the minimum amount of liability coverage required by law. The minimum is $30,000 for each injured person (up to $60,000 per accident) and $25,000 for property damage per accident. You can also get uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and $2,500 of personal injury protection.

An insurance agent can apply for you. TAIPA will assign your application to an insurance company that will issue the policy and handle any claims.

  2. Home insurance

You can apply for coverage through the Texas FAIR Plan Association if you own a house, townhouse, condo, or manufactured home. The FAIR Plan also sells renters insurance.

To get a policy, you must have been turned down by two insurance companies. You won’t qualify if a company has offered you a policy or renewal.

Contact an agent to find a FAIR Plan policy.

If you need more insurance than a FAIR plan policy provides, your agent might suggest surplus lines insurance. Surplus lines is a special type of insurance that covers unique risks, like hard-to-insure houses. Surplus lines insurance has fewer consumer protections than typical home insurance.

  3. Wind damage coverage

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) sells wind and hail coverage for coastal residents who have been turned down by an insurance company. You can apply for TWIA coverage through your insurance agent.

Depending on where you live, you might need flood insurance before you can get a TWIA policy. You also might need a home inspection by an engineer or windstorm inspector.

Don’t wait until the last minute to buy wind and hail insurance. TWIA won’t sell you a policy if there’s a hurricane on the way.
