Former NFL player sentenced for making over $33,000 in false medical claims

Español

Former NFL player James Adkisson pleaded guilty to submitting more than $33,000 in fraudulent health reimbursement claims after an investigation by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) Fraud Unit.

Adkisson was sentenced in Harris County April 13, 2023. He received 5 years deferred adjudication, 60 hours of community service, and was ordered to pay restitution.

The offense was part of a scheme involving at least eight former NFL players who filed similar false claims with the assistance of Houston athletic trainer Louis Ray. Ray would provide false documentation of the alleged treatments in exchange for a cut of the proceeds.
