Home Inventory Activity for Kids

Do a home inventory

Here's a fun activity to help your parents. It can also help you learn more about insurance. If something happens to your house or to your property, your insurance company will want to know what you own. It's a good idea to have a list of your property before anything happens.

Go into every room in your house and write down all the things in them. Use our Home inventory checklist to help you.

Ask your parents to help you finish your list. Ask them about how much each thing costs and if it has a serial number. A serial number is a special number that identifies the things that belong to you. A serial number can help police find things that are stolen.

If you have a camera, you can take pictures of each room. After you finish your list, give it to your parents to put in a safe place. It's a good idea to keep the list and the pictures somewhere away from your house. That way, you will still have a copy if something happens to your house. Email the list and pictures to yourself or a family member and save it on a computer.
