The owner of an East Austin restaurant and her manager have been indicted and summoned to appear in Travis County District Court for their alleged role in a $350,000 workers’ compensation fraud scheme.

Wife of former San Antonio trucking magnate charged in multi-million-dollar fraud scheme
This week, Francis Hall, the former co-owner of Bill Hall Jr. Trucking turned herself into Bexar County authorities. There had been a warrant out for Hall’s arrest since June 30 of this year when a Travis County grand jury indicted her for fraud.

Two Texas companies earn safety awards
The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) renewed two Texas companies’ Lone Star Safety Awards for their exemplary workplace safety programs and low rates of work-related injuries and illnesses. The companies include Pond and Company in Pasadena and Southern Plastics, Inc. in Kilgore.

Injured employee survey
Texas A&M University, Public Policy Research Institute is starting their biennial survey of injured employees on behalf of the Texas Department of Insurance, Workers’ Compensation Research and Evaluation Group (REG). The results will be used in REG’s Network Report Card required by law.

East Texas company earns safety award
The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) recognized Tyler Beverages with the Lone Star Safety Program Award for its exemplary workplace health and safety programs and low rates of work-related injuries and illnesses. Tyler Beverages bottles and distributes soft drinks and other beverages, and packages and wholesales bagged and block ice. The company employs 98 people in the Tyler area.

Arlington doctor gets prison time for fraud and drug crimes
On March 24, 2022, a U.S. district judge sentenced Clinton Battle, M.D. of Arlington to 12 years in federal prison based on a conviction and guilty plea from July 2021.

A grand jury has returned indictments against three attorneys and two law firms in Lewisville and Houston. The indictments stem from Texas Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) Fraud Unit investigations that were referred to DWC’s prosecutor embedded in the Travis County District Attorney’s Office.

Capacity of Texas employs 119 workers at its Longview plant. It manufactures terminal truck tractors for ports and railway hubs around the world.

Three Arlington, Texas health care providers will face trial for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and mail fraud. On June 17, 2020, a federal grand jury returned indictments against Dr. Clinton Battle, his nurse practitioner Donna Green, and his medical assistant Yajaira Lopez.

DWC Gets Indictments in Two Separate Workers’ Comp Fraud Cases
On April 8, Travis County grand juries returned indictments against two Texas companies involved in alleged premium fraud. Amer Haurani of Ambassador Limousine and Charter service out of Houston is charged with a first-degree felony for allegedly under reporting payroll for limousine drivers to get a lower insurance rate. Kevin Ortiz of Ortiz Drywall in Lockhart was also indicted April 8 on a state jail felony for premium fraud.

Houston Company to Pay a Quarter Million Dollars to Settle Workers’ Comp Fraud Case
A Houston company pleaded guilty today to workers’ compensation premium fraud in a case that spanned four years. Alpha Mar, which makes custom parts for various industries, entered the plea in a Travis County District Court. The company was ordered to pay $250,000 to Texas Mutual Insurance Company, the workers’ compensation carrier.
