Hurricane season starts June 1. You’ve mapped out an evacuation route, but have you reviewed your insurance coverage to make sure your family would be protected after a storm?
Use these tips to make sure you’re prepared:
- Check your home insurance policy to see if it covers wind damage. If not, shop for windstorm insurance.
- Consider comprehensive coverage for your car. It covers damage to your car from flood, hail, fire, and wind.
- Put your agent and insurance company in the contact list on your phone. Make copies of important documents, such as your policy’s declaration page and auto and health ID cards. Email them to yourself so you can get to them if you leave your house.
- Consider flood insurance. Most homeowners insurance doesn’t cover damage from flooding. Don’t delay: flood policies usually take effect 30 days after purchase.
- Check your roof and windows for how they’re holding up. Repairs and reinforcement could save you money later.
- Make a room-by-room home inventory. This could help if you have to file an insurance claim.
- Build an emergency go kit, including water, food, medicine, clothes, pet food, and other vital supplies.
