Drive safe: Secure the load

Cargo securement

Español

Truckers haul everything from tools and trash to heavy equipment and building materials. When loads shift or fall onto roadways, the results can be deadly. According to the National Traffic Safety Administration, unsecured loads cause more than 700 deaths each year. Taking time to properly tie down and cover cargo protects workers, drivers, and the nation’s supply chain. Follow these safety tips to make sure every load reaches its destination securely.

1 Plan and select your equipment.

Before loading cargo, choose a vehicle and securement equipment (tie-downs, chains, bracing) that match the size and weight of your cargo. Check the working load limits and ensure gear meets or exceeds your needs.

2 Inspect all securement gear.

Check straps, chains, and anchor points for wear, rust, or damage before every trip. Remove and replace anything damaged.

3 Distribute weight evenly.

Balance cargo from side to side and front to back, placing heavy items low and centered over axles. Even weight distribution prevents shifting and rollovers.

4 Use enough tie-downs.

Secure every large or heavy item with at least two tie-downs (rated for load weight), positioned as close to the cargo and as evenly spaced as possible. Longer or heavier loads may need more tie-downs.

5 Block, brace, and pad when needed.

Use chocks, cradles, and packing material to keep cargo from rolling or shifting. Pad between tie-downs and fragile items to prevent damage.

6 Cover and secure loose material.

Use tarps or nets for gravel, trash, or other small debris that could blow off. Fasten covers tightly at all corners.

7 Tighten, test, and monitor.

After loading, tighten all securement devices to make sure nothing moves. Re-inspect the cargo after driving the first few miles, and regularly re-inspect it on long hauls. Check your mirrors often for shifting loads.

8 Follow state laws.

Cargo securement rules may vary by state, so know the requirements where you drive. If you see debris or an unsecured load on the road, stay clear and notify authorities.
