Every second counts when a fire breaks out. That’s why creating and practicing a fire escape plan is important for your family’s safety.
Learn more from TDI’s Texas Insurance Podcast.
To plan your family’s exit, draw a map of your home and find two ways out of every room. Then, walk everyone through how to use them.
You won’t always be in the living room when a fire alarm sounds. Practice escaping from bedrooms, hallways, and common areas, too. Teach everyone how to stay low to the ground to avoid smoke.
Choose a safe meeting spot
No one should go back inside a burning home. Pick a meeting place like a mailbox, a neighbor’s driveway, or a large tree. This will make sure firefighters don’t risk their lives searching for someone who’s already safe.
Prepare for second‑floor escapes
If your home has a second level, keep a fire escape ladder near a window that your family can use. Make sure the ladder fits the windowsill and that the window opens easily.
For families with young children, check the ladder’s age recommendations and practice using it safely from the first floor. Turn practicing into a game to help kids feel confident.
