Cooperation with local jurisdictions and fire departments

Notice Date: April 2023

State properties and facilities where the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) depend on local fire departments for emergency response and fire suppression. These departments must have the confidence that the buildings and fire safety systems meet state standards and are compatible with local fire equipment. This enables departments to safely and promptly respond to emergencies.

Others involved

Staff involved in safety, planning, operation, and maintenance must know their responsibilities for ensuring the facility and building are compatible with the requirements of local fire departments.

All third-party contractors, architects, and engineers that provide design and construction services must assure the state agency or facility that both the SFMO's adopted codes and any local requirements are addressed in the planning, design, construction, and operation.

Safety features

All fire safety features and emergency equipment must be designed with the operation of the local fire department in mind. This includes water mains, fire hydrants, access roads, fire lanes, turning radius requirements, fire department connections, fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and standpipe and hose systems.

The local fire department should be invited to review plans and to participate in acceptance tests of water mains and fire protection systems.
