Keeping kids safe in the kitchen

Español

For many, the holidays mean family time in the kitchen. But the kitchen is also the most dangerous room in the house. Keep younger family members and friends safe with these tips.
  1. Keep kids away from the stove and oven.

Tell kids to stay three feet away from the stove, oven, or other hot appliances and food. Never hold a child while you’re cooking or carrying hot foods and liquids.

  2. Give kids simple tasks if they want to help.

Let them stir, mix, or decorate. Keep them away from dangerous appliances and sharp objects.

  3. Don’t leave kids alone in the kitchen.

Stay in the kitchen while you’re cooking. This is especially important when children are with you. Make sure they’re always supervised by an adult.

  4. Talk with your kids about kitchen safety.

Make sure they know which things are hot and shouldn’t be touched. Tell them to always have an adult with them in the kitchen.
