The State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) rescinds the May 2016 Fire Marshal Notice about fire department key access boxes.
Requirements
State agencies are required to coordinate with the local responding fire department on the key box system they use. The SFMO doesn’t establish the type of key box that should be used.
If the fire department doesn’t use a key box system, get a written statement that says that and provide it to the SFMO inspector during your fire inspection.
The requirements of a key box are identified in NFPA 1, Fire Code, 2015 edition, Chapter 18.2.2.1.
