How to shop smart for insurance

Español

Shopping for insurance can be a confusing maze of jargon, polices, and prices. We have a few tips to help you get the protection you need at the best price.
Seven dangling percentage signs. Tips to find insurance at the best price.
  1. Shop around

Yes, it’s that simple. Make sure to check prices for home and auto policies at least every three years. You often get the best rates when you’re willing to switch companies. You can also get sample rates at HelpInsure.

  2. Ask about discounts

Most companies offer discounts for a variety of reasons. For example, you may be able to get a discount if you have a burglar alarm or cover a teen driver who makes good grades.

  3. Check complaints

Call our Consumer Help Line at 800-252-3439 to check a company’s complaint record before buying a policy. A good price is only a bargain if you also get good service.

  4. Decide on the deductible

A deductible is the amount you have to pay before the insurance company will pay. For example, if your car has $1,000 in damage and you have a $300 deductible, the insurance company will pay $700. A higher deductible generally means a lower cost for the policy, but it also means you’ll have to pay more out-of-pocket if you have a claim.
