East Texas Companies Earn Safety Awards

San Antonio Company Earns Safety Award

The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) recognized East Texas Lighthouse for the Blind and Tatum Excavating Company for their exemplary workplace safety programs and low rates of work-related injuries and illnesses by renewing their Lone Star Safety Awards.

East Texas Lighthouse for the Blind has 81 employees at its Tyler facility. The company produces sanitary paper products. East Texas Lighthouse for the Blind received its first Lone Star Award in May 2018.

 Tatum Excavating

Tatum Excavating has 45 employees at its Texarkana facility. The company provides site preparation and turnkey general contracting services for heavy civil construction projects. Tatum Excavating received its first Lone Star Award in September 2018.

Both companies’ management teams continue to have a strong safety culture that provides motivation, participation, and opportunities for employee input into their safety programs. The companies actively recognize employees for reporting, analyzing, and mitigating safety concerns.

These companies have also earned the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) certifications. The SHARP certification recognizes small business employers who use the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) On-Site Consultation Program services and operate an exemplary safety and health program.

Employers must have a proven safety program and injury incidence rates below the national average for the last three years, and no work-related fatalities within the prior 12 months.
