The Claims Specialist performs complex (senior-level) administrative work in support of the Records Management and Support program area. Work involves identifying and processing various claims related forms and documents and data entering information within an electronic environment. Claims Specialists may also develop training materials and may conduct employee training. Claims Specialists receive ongoing training and professional development.

This position:

  • verifies and updates claim information in systems and processes forms in a paperless environment;
  • researches incomplete or missing claim information for forms exception processing;
  • performs administrative functions related to claim creation or document handling;
  • participates in the planning, training and execution of records management processes;
  • compiles and enters data for production reports;
  • explains the Texas workers' compensation law, rules, policies and advisories to internal and external customers; and
  • performs other duties as assigned.


Graduation from high school or equivalent. College hours in course work relevant to required experience may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Additionally, this position:

  • requires one and one-half years of experience performing administrative procedures and using automated data systems; and
  • prefers two-years of experience using word processing software; collecting, reviewing and verifying data; and providing customer service.

This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:

  • accepted business practices and procedures;
  • business terminology, spelling, punctuation, grammar and mathematics; and
  • personal computers and software applications such as Microsoft Office.

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

  • planning, problem solving, and decision making;
  • communicating effectively both orally and in writing;
  • applying training, rules, regulations and procedures;
  • developing training materials; and
  • using Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

  • handle multiple tasks simultaneously and to manage conflicting priorities;
  • apply critical thinking to identify, and understand, the differences between document types and document submission;
  • handle multiple tasks simultaneously and manage conflicting priorities in order to meet deadlines;
  • communicating effectively to a variety of audiences;
  • train staff members;
  • conduct research and compile data for reports;
  • apply training concepts in the work environment;
  • understand and carry out complex instructions;
  • make decisions in accordance with rules, regulations and procedures;
  • use critical thinking to analyze and solve work problems;
  • work effectively in a professional team environment; and
  • establish and maintain a harmonious working relationship with co-workers, agency staff and external customers.

    A skills test will be administered during the interview.
