Current Opportunity: Fire Safety Inspector

The Fire Safety Inspector serves as the liaison between the State Fire Marshal’s Office, customers and local authorities having jurisdiction. This position prepares plans as related to fire safety for large gatherings indoors and outdoors, and also provides customer service and outreach to entities and individuals requesting fire safety inspections.


This position:

  • performs tasks related to fire safety;
  • completes narrative reports to record conditions in violation of fire safety standards and suggesting methods of correction;
  • travels to conduct fire safety inspections;
  • presents, assists, and/or coordinates fire and life safety outreach programs;
  • attends training and performs research necessary for professional development; and
  • testifies at administrative hearings and criminal trials.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in a field related to assignment.  Education and experience relevant to position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.


Additionally, this position:

  • requires three years experience in fire safety work or related field;
  • requires earning and/or obtaining a Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) certification as a fire inspector within one year of date hired;
  • requires the inspector to reside in a county within their assigned district; and
  • prefers a degree in Fire Science Technology or equivalent fire safety inspection experience.


This position requires the demonstrated knowledge of:

  • the National Fire Protection Association 1 (NFPA 1);
  • the Incident Command System (ICS);
  • fire dynamics; and
  • the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office software.

This position requires the demonstrated skill in:

  • providing customer service to the public and government entities;
  • problem solving, decision making and planning; and
  • conducting interviews and inspections.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

  • communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • develop and maintain effective working relationships with fire service, law enforcement, the public, co-workers, agency staff and industry representatives;
  • apply critical thinking to evaluate, analyze and interpret information;
  • work independently with minimal supervision;
  • work outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions;
  • drive for extended period of time, often in remote areas;
  • do heavy lifting, walking, pushing, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching; and
  • relocate as required to meet the operational needs of the agency.
